Digital Transformation of Lithuanian Schools – TeraSky case study

Google Albus: Building Digital Literacy in Lithuanian Schools
In 2024, Google and TeraSky launched the Google Albus project in Lithuania — an initiative designed to evaluate the impact of Google for Education platforms and Chromebooks on teaching and learning processes. It marked the first time such a complex pilot was carried out in Lithuanian schools.
Two schools — Kaunas Jesuit Gymnasium and Vilnius Antakalnis Progymnasium — were selected to implement the program. Students and teachers integrated Chromebooks and Google Workspace tools into their daily activities, enriching lessons with Google Classroom, Docs, Sheets, and the Gemini AI assistant. The aim was to modernize education, enhance digital literacy, and build future-ready skills.
Challenge
The schools faced a common challenge: how to update traditional learning methods to match the rapid pace of technological development. Strengthening students' digital competencies and helping teachers confidently use digital tools became a priority. The project also sought to address broader educational goals, such as fostering independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving through innovative technologies.

Implementation
The project combined extensive research with practical training. Quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted involving over 380 students and 77 teachers. Surveys and focus groups captured changes in digital skills, attitudes toward technology, and learning outcomes.
From February to June 2024, more than 150 hours of training sessions were delivered. Teachers participated in live and remote workshops covering Chromebook use, Google Workspace tools, cybersecurity, AI integration, and subject-specific digital practices. Many teachers earned Google Workspace Level 1 certification, further strengthening digital adoption within the schools.
Students, meanwhile, learned to use Google tools not only for everyday tasks but also for collaborative projects and creative assignments. Gemini AI supported them by generating ideas, translating texts, and simplifying complex concepts.
Results
The results of the Google Albus project were significant. Students' digital literacy improved markedly, with higher rates of daily technology use and better collaboration skills. After the program, 73% of older students reported using digital tools every day, compared to 66% at the beginning. Younger students showed a growing interest in creating game-based learning apps, while critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills also advanced.
Teachers reported greater confidence in using technology to structure lessons, track student progress, and enhance classroom interactivity. Feedback from both schools confirmed that integrating Google for Education tools not only improved academic engagement but also made learning more dynamic and accessible.
Conclusion
The Google Albus project proved that the integration of innovative digital tools can significantly enhance education quality. By empowering teachers and students with practical technologies and AI-driven resources, Lithuanian schools are taking important steps toward a future where digital literacy is a natural part of learning. The success of this pilot project lays a strong foundation for broader adoption across the country’s education system.
